A New Beginning

Soft pastel landscape of a tree overlooking a lake by Heidi Karni or Broken Colour Pastels

I get so much joy from painting with pastels.

I love playing with the colours and textures, layering pigment crystals to sculpt light and shadow until a beautiful landscape emerges.

I also love that working with pastels is fast, I can often complete a painting in 30 minutes. I don’t need to have water on hand, or brushes, or wait for the paper to dry. The mess is fun, and really not as messy as you might think, and I truly believe this is the easiest medium to work in.

The simplest way to explain my affinity towards soft pastels is that it feels like play, and the results are so satisfying, even as a beginner.

For all the reasons mentioned, I’ve decided to start this blog where I will share my process, my thoughts on different soft pastel brands, papers and other supplies, as well as a YouTube channel sharing tutorial videos. Most of these are time lapse videos of my entire process from start to finish, but I also plan to add more instructional videos over time.

I would appreciate it if you would consider subscribing to this blog as well as my YouTube channel, and please let me know if you have any thoughts on content you would like me to create or topics you would like me to cover.

Thanks for joining me on this adventure!
